Maintaining our own health is a topic that is up for debate.  What is healthy?  We could ask 20 different people and get 20 different answers.  There is a lot of great information out there and there is a lot of very misleading trends that give people a false belief that they are taking care of their bodies for a long and flourishing life.

While I was waiting to get into a nursing program at City College of San Francisco I became intrigued by documentaries discussing the possibility of treating disease with nutrition and lifestyle.  I, along with most Americans, viewed doctors as being all-knowing and saw disease as something that we as individuals had very little control over.  Once I really started to understand the way that our healthcare system works along with the perils of the food industry I came to the astonishing realization that I lived an incredibly unhealthy lifestyle.  I had never been taught what “healthy” really meant and the more I learned and delved into holistic treatment the more I felt I was really starting to gain a firm grasp on, at the very least, my own definition of that word.

On that note, I moved to Portland, Maine and changed my major.  I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a BS in Health Science and a minor in Holistic Health.  I am now looking into graduate programs for Public Health.  I am also a Nutrition and Wellness councelor.  Instead of treating illness once it has already taken over the body I would like to help educate people on how they can take their health back into their own hands.  We have the power and responsibility to give ourselves the best care possible.  Doctors are only human.  We know what our bodies feel and try to tell us and we have the intuition to give ourselves what our bodies are trying to ask for.

This blog is my modality to share recipes, wellness tips, do it yourself household and beauty products and so forth.  I will be sharing healthy recipes with all of their nutritional and health benefits, ways to lower or eliminate the negative effects of stress on the body, ways to eliminate unnecessary toxins from out lives and how to combat illness in a way that is effective, preventative and not using a pill to mask symptoms without even taking a look at the actual problem. It is time that we took our power back.  We can be our own medicine.
